Founded in 1450 by Hosokawa Katsumoto, a deputy of the Muromachi Shogunate, Ryoanji Temple (Daiunzan Ryoanji) is a Zen temple steeped in proud history. Its "Rock Garden" Special Scenic Site and Historic Site, admired by Queen Elizabeth II during her official visit in 1975, has garnered worldwide renown as its Karesansui (Rock garden), defined by an enigmatic composition of fifteen stones. In spring, weeping cherry blossoms cascade over the earthen walls, spilling gently into the garden, revealing a fleeting harmony between the "stillness" of the immovable stones and the "motion" of the swaying blossoms, creating a vision of exquisite balance found only in this season.
This exclusive tour allows guests to reserve the veranda of the Hojo (Abbot’s Quarters) after the temple has closed to the public. In the profound silence of the evening, you will experience Zazen meditation led by the head priest. Facing the Rock Garden as the sky softens into hues of cherry blossom,, this is a luxurious moment to reflect upon oneself. The experience also includes a guided tour by a temple curator to the normally closed ”Butsuden (Buddaha Hall)”, the "Zoroku-an" tea house, and a viewing of thetreasured temple artifacts. Together, these encounters form a deeply contemplative and soul-cleansing experience, where time, spirit, and beauty gently converge.
