About the Gozan no Okuribi (Mountain Bonfire) in Kyoto
Gozan no Okuribi marks the end of the Obon festival, a time when the spirits of ancestors are believed to visit the living. During Gozan no Okuribi, large bonfires are lit on the five mountains (Gozan) surrounding Kyoto. Each fire (Okuribi) forms a specific character or shape, and guide the spirits back to the afterlife. The event is a significant cultural and spiritual tradition, drawing many visitors who gather to watch the spectacular fires illuminate the night sky.
