Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) is one of Kyoto’s three great festivals and the grand annual celebration of Heian Shrine. The festival is renowned for its Historical Procession, which retraces the city’s history from the Meiji Restoration in the 19th century back to the Enryaku era in the 8th century, vividly bringing Kyoto’s legacy into the present day. Nearly 2,000 citizens parade in authentic costumes representing each era, showcasing the finest traditions of the city’s history and craftsmanship.
