The Kyo-koma spinning top is a traditional Kyoto craft that dates from the Momoyama Period (1568-1600), when aristocratic ladies would make spinning tops for entertainment from kimono fabric by winding these threads around a spindle. These days, thin cotton threads are used, which are lined up together to make a flat ribbon and then coated it to give it strength, then wound around a spindle. There is only one place in the ancient capital where Kyo-koma are still being made, and that is a workshop called Jakkyu. So why not visit this unique location and create your own one-of-a-kind Kyo-koma? The artisans at Jakkyu will assist you in selecting colors and shaping your spinning top. This experience is suitable for both adults and children.
